- In Aesop's fable "The Frogs Who Desired a King," the frogs, unsatisfied with their freedom, ask Jupiter to give them one.
- The Panchatantra ("the five books" in Sanskrit) is an Indian collection of animal fables written between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, later translated into Persian, Arabic and Hebrew.
- "The Oak and the Reed" already appears in Aesop with the same characters; La Fontaine later gave it a far more developed poetic form.
- The moral, a fable's concluding lesson, can appear at the start or the end; La Fontaine often phrased his in an aphoristic style.
